The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) released its 2024 report on September 18, highlighting a significant connection between alcohol consumption and six types of cancer. The report indicates that 40% of cancers in the U.S. are linked to factors we can change, such as alcohol use, smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise.
As rates of certain cancers rise among younger adults, the AACR is urging better public health messaging to raise awareness about the cancer risks associated with drinking. They stress that by cutting back or quitting alcohol, people can significantly lower their risk of developing alcohol-related cancers.
Research included in the report shows that higher alcohol intake not only increases the risk of specific alcohol-related cancers but also raises the likelihood of developing all types of cancer. A 2022 study found that those who reduced their drinking had an 8% lower risk of alcohol-related cancers and a 4% lower overall cancer risk.
