Nashik: The excise department in Nashik on Wednesday seized alcohol worth Rs 10 lakh that was being transported in a sports utility vehicle (SUV).
Superintendent of police Manohar Anchule said they received information from their sources following which a trap was laid on Trimbak Road and the suspected vehicle was intercepted.
“We had received a tip-off about huge quantity of liquor being smuggled into the state. Acting on this information, we set up a checkpoint at Belgaon Dhaga,” he said.
“The team at the checkpoint came across a SUV matching the description and upon searching, different brands of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were found. The alcohol is not meant for sale in Maharashtra and was bought from Dadra and Nagar Haveli,” he added.
The excise officials have detained the SUV driver, a resident of Bharat Nagar in Aurangabad, for further interrogation. “Many people buy alcohol from Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli owing to cheaper rates as taxes on alcohol over there much less than that in Maharashtra,” an excise official said.
“Hence, a large quantity of liquor being transported from Daman is seized by the excise department on a regular basis,” he added.
